On April 7, Carlos Iván Mendoza Hernández, a Salvadoran national, was shot after being detained by immigration agents on a highway in California’s Central Valley. The father of a two-year-old girl and partner of a U.S. citizen survived, but his life has never been the same since. One of the main impacts has been the trauma that has affected his entire family. Sophia Rerucha reconstructs this story and shares how the violence of immigration policy affects mental health in the most vulnerable communities.
