During the pandemic, millions of people in California paid for their health insurance with federal government subsidies. However, that resource was eliminated last year with the passage of Trump’s sweeping budget package. As a result, insurance costs skyrocketed in January. Daniela Rodríguez spoke with a California resident who now pays higher premiums and who lives in the district of Republican lawmaker David Valadao, who voted to eliminate the subsidies. She brings us this report from the city of Bakersfield.
