TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16
PROGRAM #10899 12:00 PM PT

Mexico’s “Grito” Under ICE’s Shadow.

Plans for the Mexican Independence Day parade and celebrations in Chicago are moving forward, though overshadowed by the threat of ICE raids and troop deployments ordered by the White House. These national celebrations traditionally bring together tens of thousands of residents. How are Chicago and other cities preparing to celebrate in the midst of immigration crackdowns? How is neighborhood life shifting? Which major festivities have already been canceled in Chicago and beyond?

Guest: Netzahualcóyotl Roldán, CEO, Binational Institute of Human Development Immigration & Legal Center – Casa Mexico USA, Chicago, IL.

No Right to Bail. Millions of immigrants who entered the country without inspection and may be detained will no longer have the right to request bail. That’s the ruling from a federal immigration board. The measure will force many to remain behind bars for months or even years. For decades, judges have released individuals who posed no danger or flight risk after posting bonds. What impact will this have on the immigrant detention system? What about the families of the detainees? How can long-term detention be prevented?

Guest: Ariel Ruiz Soto, Senior Policy Analyst , Migration Policy Institute, Sacramento, CA.

Know Your Rights: Safe Workplaces. After the largest immigration raid in years—nearly 500 workers detained at a Hyundai battery plant in Georgia—fears are rising across workplaces, and new questions are emerging about labor rights in an era of persecution. How is the raid affecting local communities? What can workers expect? Is it possible to ensure safe working conditions for undocumented employees and their employers? What labor laws should everyone be aware of? What protections exist against raids in workplaces and neighborhoods?

Guest: Carolina Castañeda, Senior Staff Attorney, Immigrant Legal Resource Center-ILRC, Merced, CA.
