The environmental crisis is threatening the livelihoods of fishing communities, especially those in the most remote areas. In 2025, Hurricane Erick devastated mangroves in the lagoons in Oaxaca, Mexico, putting pressure on the mangrove mussel. This mollusk, known locally as “tichinda,” is an important source of income for the Indigenous and Afro-descendant fisherwomen of the Corralero-Alotengo lagoon. Jackie Botts reports from Oaxaca on their efforts to keep the mangrove healthy through sustainable fishing.
