Despite a very wet winter, the worsening Colorado River drought and heat crisis threatens the water supply to 40 million people, as almost all of the water in the river is diverted for giant farms and industries. Many are turning for answers in the culture of the Acequia communities, a traditional irrigation ditch system built by Latino families centuries ago in Colorado and New Mexico. How do acequias of the San Luis Valley work? How relevant is this old system in the XXI century? At a time of climate change, what can we learn from acequias to better manage and save the Colorado River? This archival program was originally aired on July 10, 2023.
