Cinco de Mayo and Mole Poblano

MONDAY, MAY 5
PROGRAM #10764 12:00 PM PT
Cinco de Mayo and Mole Poblano.
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday celebrating the battle against French invaders which took place in the city of Puebla. To mark the occasion, a Puebla-born chef who also celebrates Cinco de Mayo festivities in the US reflects on the holiday. She encourages people to go beyond the stereotypical menu of tacos, guacamole and margaritas, and explore the rich, world-recognized Mexican gastronomy, including traditional dishes rooted in Puebla, such as Mole Poblano, Chiles en Nogada, and Chalupas.
Guest: María Iñigo, Mexican Food Writer, Puebla, Mexico.
First Cinco de Mayo Festivities. Census 2000 data shows that the soaring numbers of Latinos are browning the face of the US. Mexican communities become visible in downtowns of the US heartlands in times of celebration. This holiday special is a repeat of archival interviews on the first Cinco de Mayo festivities that are starting to emerge in areas with fledgling, newcomer Mexican populations such as Park City, UT; Cincinnati, OH; and Atlanta, GA. The interviews were originally aired 25 years ago, on May 4, 2001.
Guests: Marcela Montemurro, Executive Director, PeaceHouse and Co-organizer, Fiestas del Cinco de Mayo, Park City, UT; Silvia Martinez-Krull, Businesswoman, Co-organizer Fiestas Cinco de Mayo, Cincinnati, OH; Patricia Ramos, News Correspondent, Atlanta, GA.
