Can the New Farm Bill Be a Climate Bill?
The new Farm Bill is stuck in a divided Congress, causing uncertainty among farmers. And although the current Farm Bill expires at the end of September, the real impact will be felt until the end of the year. While the Farm Bill is associated with food security, because it gives ag producers income support and promotes consumption among the poor through the SNAP food program, the new bill is seen as an opportunity to invest big in addressing the unprecedented climate crisis. As rural communities are being devastated by wildfires, drought and floods, what can farmers and ranchers do to help build climate resilience?
Guests: Gabe Vásquez, US House Representative, D-New Mexico, Washington, DC; Miguel Altieri, Emeritus Professor, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA; Antonio De Loera-Brust, Communications Director, United Farm Workers Foundation-UFW, Sacramento, CA.
