California’s Fishing Fleet Is Aging

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21
PROGRAM #11306 12:00 PM PT

California’s Fishing Fleet Is Aging.

California’s commercial fishing fleet is shrinking, while new fishermen face high costs, unpredictable income, hard-to-get permits, and increasingly uncertain fishing seasons. An apprenticeship program is training a new generation of fishermen while highlighting the barriers threatening the industry’s future. Why is it so hard to make a living fishing in California? What is at stake for coastal communities? And what does this mean for access to locally caught seafood?

Guest: Adriana Heldiz, Assistant Visuals Editor, CalMatters, San Diego, CA.

Farm to School. Buying locally grown food for schools does more than improve students’ meals — it also strengthens California’s economy. A new report finds that the Farm to School program creates new markets for farmers and keeps more money circulating within the state. How does this model benefit farmers and families? And how can it be sustained as small farms struggle to stay open and school cafeterias face limited resources?

Guest: Ricardo Vela, Manager of News and Information Outreach in Spanish, University of California at Riverside, Palm Desert, CA.
