World Water Week. Unprotected Wetlands

MONDAY, AUGUST 25

PROGRAM #10875 12:00 PM PT

World Water Week. Unprotected Wetlands.

From his first day in office, Trump ordered the rollback of Clean Water Act protections against industrial pollution. Environmental advocates warn that this decision places vast areas of wetlands and waterways at risk. What are the consequences for communities and ecosystems when these safeguards are removed? Who benefits, and who pays the price of a policy that reduces wetlands to “mere puddles and ditches”?

Guest: Camila Cáceres, Water Equity and Oceans Program Advocate, GreenLatinos, San Francisco, CA.

The Battle Over Electoral Maps. The Republican legislature in Texas has passed a political map designed at Trump’s request to grant Republicans five additional congressional seats. California is responding in kind: With the approval of state lawmakers, Governor Gavin Newsom has called a November 4 election, where voters will decide whether to approve a redistricting plan that would give Democrats five more seats in Congress. What would this battle of maps mean for the nation’s political balance? How might the courts weigh in? What do citizens think?

Guests: Abel Maldonado, Former Lt. Governor, Republican Leader, Santa Barbara, CA; David Ayón, Political Analyst and Researcher, Center for the Study of Los Angeles, Oakland, CA.

Launch of a National Institute of Latino Scientists. Amid the offensive against so-called “woke science,” the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has dismantled key studies on racial and socioeconomic gaps. In response, Latino researchers and communities are building their scientific infrastructure: a national institute of research announced as the first community-driven database led by Latinos. Its mission is to document realities in maternal health, nutrition, and HIV among both children and adults. What information will this pioneering effort collect? What are the big matters to address? What is its research model, and where is it headed?

Guest: Dr. Waleska Crespo, President, Universidad Central del Caribe
Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
