At his first appearance in a New York courtroom, former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed he was kidnapped and considered himself a prisoner of war. The Chavista leader pleaded not guilty to charges of narcoterrorism and conspiracy brought against him by the U.S. government following a violent operation in which his wife, Cilia Flores, was also captured.
