Wetlands Under Threat

PROGRAM #10978 11:00 AM PT

Wetlands Under Threat.

The Environmental Protection Agency has unveiled a proposal to remove federal protections from millions of acres of wetlands and streams. Agribusiness and industry groups have welcomed the move. Environmental advocates warn that at a time of intensifying storms, droughts, and climate-driven floods, safeguarding these ecosystems is urgent: they are essential sources of drinking water, natural buffers against disasters, and vital wildlife habitats. The Mississippi Basin—already suffering massive wetland loss—is among the most vulnerable regions. What would this proposal mean for public health and the environment? Which communities stand to be most affected? This is a special program in the series “Cuando se seca el arroyo”.

Guests: Vanessa Muñoz, Waterways Program Manager, Hispanic Access Foundation, Diego, CA; Maria Luisa Rossel, Press secretary and spokesperson for Spanish-language media, National Wildlife Federation, Washington, DC; Dr. Román Alejandro Canul Turriza, Co-chair, International Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists in Latin America and the Caribbean region and Research Professor, Head of the Hydraulics Laboratory and Academic Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Engineering with a Focus on Land Transportation, Faculty of Engineering, Autonomous University of Campeche, San Francisco de Campeche, MX; Dr. Gary Ervin, Secretary, South Central Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists and Professor of Biological Sciences, Mississippi State University, MS.
