TUESDAY, MAY 27
PROGRAM #10787 12:00 PM PT

Venezuelans Without TPS. The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the federal government to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans, which puts hundreds of thousands at risk of deportation. Republican leaders in Miami are concerned about the potential impact of these deportations. What alternatives are available for these migrants? Under the new U.S. immigration policy, who qualifies for humanitarian protection? Could this crackdown affect Trump’s support among his followers in Florida?

Guest: Liz Rebeca Alarcón, Venezuelan-American Political Analyst, Miami, FL.

A Recognized Advocate… Behind Bars. Jeanette Vizguerra, a longtime immigrant rights advocate who once took sanctuary in a Denver church, has been honored with the prestigious Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award. However, currently detained in an immigration facility, it’s unlikely she can attend the ceremony. Her recognition reignites debate about the reprisals faced by those who speak out. What does Vizguerra’s story reveal about the criminalization of immigrant rights defenders? Samuel Orozco, Radio Bilingüe’s news director, talked to Jeanette in 2019, and her message is today more relevant than ever. Listen again to the conversation.

Guest: Jeanette Vizguerra (2019)

Human Rights Violations in Detention Centers. Abuse, arbitrary detention, and disregard for international human rights standards are among the violations Amnesty International documented in El Paso, Texas. Following a visit to a migrant detention facility, the organization released a report revealing the harsh conditions migrants are exposed to. What is the current situation inside these centers? How have conditions changed under Trump’s second administration? And who is responsible for ensuring migrant people’s fundamental rights?

Guest: Rufina Reyes, La Resistencia Director, Seattle, WA
