PROGRAM #10915 11:00 AM PT

University of the Yaqui People: Breaking New Ground.

The Pueblo Yaqui University recently welcomed its first generation of Yaqui youth and other Indigenous students from the Sonoran Desert region. As part of the Yaqui People’s Justice Plan, the university aims to break away from assimilationist and integrationist policies, instead fostering respect for Indigenous culture, language, ancestral knowledge, and traditional forms of organization and education. The university’s first president shares insights on its academic programs and the vision guiding this pioneering project. This special program airs during Latino Heritage Month as part of the series “Thirty Years, Thirty Voices”.

Guest: Crescencio Buitimea Valenzuela, President, University of the Yaqui People, Vícam Pueblo, Guaymas, Sonora, MX.
