TUESDAY, APRIL 28
PROGRAM #11123 12:00 PM PT

Under Surveillance.

An investigation reveals that in Portland, Oregon, a legal loophole allows local police — including license plate scanners — to share data with federal immigration authorities. Tech corporations are signing contracts with police departments to build a warrantless data-sharing infrastructure that threatens sanctuary city protections. How is data exchanged between tech companies, local law enforcement, and ICE? How effective is sanctuary protection? And who is most at risk?

Guest: Paulina Velasco, Editor & Collaborator, Feet in 2 Worlds, San Francisco, CA.

Marches and Strikes Planned for May Day. A coalition of immigrant rights organizations and labor unions is mobilizing across California and the country ahead of May 1st. For its organizers, this is a critical moment — the Trump administration’s attacks on workers and immigrants show no signs of letting up, and the midterm elections are closing in. Their message: “the people — immigrants, workers, Californians — will not stay silent.” What are their demands? Who makes up this coalition? And what actions are planned?

Guests: Patricia Santana, Member of SEIU Local, 2015 President of the Local’s Latino Caucus Los Angeles, CA; Alma Santana, Director of Immigrant Rights and Participation Civic Politics, Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA), San Francisco, CA.

Immigrants Fear Enrolling in Medi-Cal. Although many immigrants remain eligible, thousands are avoiding enrollment or renewal in Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, out of fear of being deemed a “public charge” or facing other legal consequences. In 2025 alone, nearly 100,000 immigrants left the program. Experts warn that this “chilling effect” could translate into a future public health crisis. How well-founded are those fears?

Guest: Claudia Boyd-Barrett, Southern California Correspondent, KFF Health News, Ojai, California.
