Tech corporations are signing contracts with police departments to build a warrantless data-sharing infrastructure that threatens sanctuary city protections. For its organizers, this is a critical moment — the Trump administration’s attacks on workers and immigrants show no signs of letting up, and the midterm elections are closing in. Immigrants Fear Enrolling in Medi-Cal. Although many immigrants remain eligible, thousands are avoiding enrollment or renewal in Medi-Cal, California’s Medicaid program, out of fear of being deemed a “public charge” or facing other legal consequences. In 2025 alone, nearly 100,000 immigrants left the program. Experts warn that this “chilling effect” could translate into a future public health crisis. How well-founded are those fears?
