PROGRAM #10948 12:00 PM PT
U.S. citizens caught in ICE raids.
More than 170 U.S. citizens were detained by immigration agents during raids and protests, some with brutal violence. Among them were at least three pregnant women. A journalistic investigation revealed these abuses, which the government does not officially track. Who are the victims? How are they fighting back? What lies behind these detentions? How are authorities responding to the revelations? What efforts are being made to investigate?
Guest: Nicole Foy, Ancil Payne Fellow, Immigration and Labor Reporter, ProPublica, New York, NY.
More troops at the border. The Department of Homeland Security has announced the launch of Operation River Wall, an “unprecedented” offensive to strengthen control along the Rio Grande in Texas. The Coast Guard will deploy boats and hundreds of agents. The announcement coincided with a new wave of immigration raids ordered by President Trump and fresh protests in several cities. What is River Wall? What justifications are being offered for this deployment? What does this new military escalation against migrants signal?
Guest: Marisa Limon Garza, Executive Director, Las Americas Immigrant Advocacy Center, El Paso, TX.
Immigration: Key Issue of Election Day. Supporters of Proposition 50 in California argue that the reform is meant to prevent Congress from being overtaken by Republican-led state governments pushing to expand the current mass deportation plan. California has been one of the hardest hit by ICE’s militarized raids. How are major pro-immigrant organizations positioning themselves on this proposed constitutional amendment? What message will California send to the nation through the results of this referendum? And how is Election Day unfolding just hours before the polls close?
Guest: Polo Morales, Deputy Director of Programs, California Immigrant Policy Center, Los Angeles, CA.
