PROGRAM #10799 12:00 PM PT
Repression and protests in Los Angeles after ICE raids.
Amid protests and violent clashes following a series of immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles and the city of Paramount, Governor Newsom, lawmakers, union members and pro-immigrant activists accuse President Trump of fabricating a crisis by sending some 2,000 National Guard troops to quell the demonstrations. In addition, union leader David Huerta was injured and arrested while observing ICE raids in the Los Angeles “fashion district,” where dozens of people were arrested. What is the social and political climate in the area, and how can communities prepare for future raids and similar oppressive acts?
Guests: Juan Jose Gutierrez, Attorney, Executive Director, Vamos Unidos USA, and National Coordinator, Full Rights for Immigrants Coalition, Los Angeles, CA; Luis Fuentes, Director and Regional Vice President, SEIU-USWW, Los Angeles, CA; Sulma Arias, Executive Director, People’s Action, Kansas City, MO.
Trump and Public Media. The public broadcasting system is facing its biggest threat in 50 years. President Trump is pressuring Congress to eliminate all federal funding for public media. Public broadcasters are suing. Why are public stations targeted? Who would be the most affected? What is the backdrop of this legal and political battle?
Guest: Francisco Rios, News Director, KDNA Radio, Granger, WA.
Hurricane Season: New Dangers. The hurricane season has begun, and experts are expecting more destructive and expensive natural disasters in the United States. Meanwhile, the government has started dismantling a significant part of the federal system meant to prepare for and respond to extreme weather disasters. What do the big federal workforce cuts mean for storm forecasts and recovery efforts? Which areas are most vulnerable? How can people protect themselves?
Guest: Dr. Juan Declet Barreto, Senior Social Scientist for Climate Vulnerability, Union of Concerned Scientists, Silver Spring, MD.
