They are trying to stop the arrival of cruise ships to Loreto Bay.

Baja California Sur, mainly Loreto Bay is a key area and refuge for blue whales, since according to experts it is an area of breeding, feeding and reproduction of this species, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2005, this Natural Protected Area is a refuge for other marine mammals.

However, cruise ship tourism, particularly at the time of the arrival of the whales, represents a risk to the ecosystem, I present below the report of my colleague Gerardo Guzman.

The auditory artist Fernando Martin Velazco found in the fauna of the Gulf of California, not only material for inspiration, but a motive to generate with his work awareness of the ecological damage that is presented specifically against the whales.

The increase in the arrival of cruise ships to Baja California increases the risk of environmental damage, especially in the Port of Loreto.

UNESCO declared the region a World Natural Heritage Site in 2005, recognizing its biological and ecological importance. The Gulf of California is home to 39% of the world’s marine mammals and a third of the world’s cetaceans. These species depend on these waters for feeding and reproduction. However, as Martin Velasco points out, large cruise ships disrupt this ecosystem.

What worries him most is the noise pollution.

That is why, apart from participating in several documentaries, publications and creative works, he joined a petition to stop the presence of the giant ships during the whale season in the bay of Loreto.

The petition is on change.org and is called “Protect the blue whale, no more cruise ships in Loreto during whale season”.

It is one more action to protect the cetaceans.

Animals with whom Fernando has managed to establish extraordinary bridges of communication through poetry and auditory art.

These sounds are found in the piece entitled “El Mar de los sonidos sin nombre”, by Fernando Martin Velazco.
