The SAVE Act Put to the Test.

Trump’s SAVE Act faces its first major test with a vote in the U.S. Senate. Based on the unfounded claim that noncitizens vote in large numbers, the bill would impose stricter voter ID and registration requirements ahead of the November elections. Trump has warned that a Republican victory depends on its passage. What does the bill include? How will it fare in a full Senate vote?

DHS in the Maze. The partial shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security has entered its second month amid a political standoff in Congress. While Democrats push for sweeping immigration reforms and propose funding for airport security and disaster relief, Republican senators continue to reject a partial funding plan. What are the effects of this prolonged shutdown? How is it impacting public services and everyday life?

César Chávez Accused of Abusing Girls. Several women claim to have suffered sexual abuse as young women at the hands of the iconic labor leader César Chávez. The allegations came to light in a journalistic investigation. Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers, stated that Chávez pressured her into sexual relations and raped her. Farmworker leaders review the charges and incidents, and discuss the assistance available to address the trauma of sexual violence survivors.
