WEDNESDAY, MAY 14

PROGRAM #10774 12:00 PM PT

The New Leader of the Catholic Church.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, born in the United States and a Peruvian citizen, was elected as the new pontiff of the Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV. Speaking in Spanish, the new Pope highlighted his connection with the Peruvian community of Chiclayo in his first speech. Who is the new pope? Will he continue the reforms initiated by Pope Francis? What will his greatest challenges be? What is expected of his relationship with the United States government?

Guest: Gustavo García-Siller, San Antonio Archbishop, San Antonio, TX.

Starvation in Gaza. Dozens of Democrats are urging the Israeli government to resume shipments of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. In a letter to Israel and US’ Marco Rubio, the lawmakers express their opposition to the Israeli blockade and their support for a renewed ceasefire and hostage release deal.

Guest: Temoris Grecko, Contributing Journalist, National Journalism Award 202 in Opinion and Analysis for “Ayotzinapa: 9 years, military and spies govern themselves”, Mexico City, MX.

Bilingual Education: Texas vs California. Bilingual education is much more common in Texas than in California. Texas enrolls twice as many English learners in bilingual education programs than California. And Texas’ English learners do better than California’s in both reading and math. Why is Texas outshining California on bilingual education? A journalist who covers the education beat is searching for answers.

Guest: Zaidee Stavely, Immigration and Education Reporter, EdSource, Oakland, CA.
