WEDNESDAY, MARCH 26

PROGRAM #10725 12:00 PM PT

The Fight for Medicaid.

Republicans in Congress are planning massive cuts to Medicaid to pay for tax cuts for wealthy people. The cuts would heavily impact millions of Latino families who rely on the popular program. After a powerful pushback from health care advocates, Republicans in districts with high enrollment claim the cuts will not hurt Medicaid enrollees. What do we know about the budget plans?

Guest: Juana Garcia, Social Media Coordinator, PowerCA Action, Fresno, CA.

Dismantling the Education Department. President Trump signed an order to eliminate the federal Education Department “once and for all.” Since only Congress can dismantle this office, Republican legislators hurried to announce legislation to shut it down. Education leaders are expected to launch legal challenges. What steps are being taken to dismantle it? How will it affect schools and students?

Guest: Patricia Gándara, Research Professor of Education, Co-Director of The Civil Rights Project, University of California, Los Angeles-UCLA, Los Angeles, CA.

End of Life Options in Illinois. The mother of a man who died suffering a long agony, doctors and advocates are launching a new campaign calling on Illinois lawmakers to advance a Medical Aid-in-Dying bill. The plan would allow many terminally ill adults the option of requesting medication in order to die peacefully. If approved, Illinois could join California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and six other states that have approved medical aid in dying laws.

Guests: Nilsa Centeno, Mother of Miguel Carrasquillo (who died from cancer at a young age), Chicago, IL; Patricia González-Portillo, Senior National Latino Media Director, Compassion and Choices, Los Angeles, CA.
