THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30
PROGRAM #10944 12:00 PM PT

Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series to serve audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis about major developments impacting Latinos in the US.

Guests: Mariana Pineda, Reporter, Houston, TX; Jesus Garcia, Reporter and Editor of Politics, Immigration, and National Affairs, El Diario and La Opinión newspapers, New York, NY; Jose Lopez Zamorano, Correspondent, Washington, DC.

The battle over congressional maps.

The decision by Texas Republicans to redraw their electoral map and add five new GOP seats to the U.S. House of Representatives has sparked a nationwide redistricting battle. Republicans in two other states have followed suit, and Democrats are preparing their response. In Virginia, Democrats plan to redraw their own congressional map, while California leaders are urging voters to approve a new political map through Proposition 50 to counter the Texas maneuver. What’s at stake nationally? How informed are voters about this political battle? What outcomes are being projected?

Guest: Dr. Ivy AM Cargile, Associate Professor of Political Science, California State University at Bakersfield-CSU Bakersfield, CA.

Pregnant women speak out. Immigrant women detained while pregnant have denounced in a letter the poor medical conditions inside detention centers. The document, supported by Democratic lawmakers and migrant rights organizations, calls on the Trump administration to end the detention of expectant mothers. Federal authorities insist they comply with prenatal care protocols. What specific complaints have been raised? What reality do these women describe? What are the legal standards, and what does international law require?

Guest: Paula Avila-Guillen, Executive Director, Women’s Equality Center, New York, NY.

Violence against immigrant advocate. ICE agents violently rammed their vehicle into a pickup truck driven by a volunteer legal observer who was alerting the community about immigration raids. The incident was captured on video, and the footage quickly spread nationwide. The activist was hospitalized, detained, and later released. In this interview, the observer recounts the incident and reflects on its broader implications.

Guest: Leonardo Martínez, Member, VC Defensa, Ventura, CA.

Fear of dying alone. In the United States, more than 16 million older adults live alone. Amid this isolation, many face a constant fear: the possibility of dying in solitude. Who will be there for these aging individuals when they reach the end of their lives? How many will pass away without anyone familiar by their side? What options exist for those with no one nearby? A timely conversation as the Día de Muertos approaches.

Guest: Paula Andalo, Ethnic Media Editor, KFF Health News, Silver Spring, MD.
