Sin Fronteras: Rhythms That Cross Borders

By Radio Bilingüe
Published December 25, 2025

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 25
PROGRAM #11000 12:00 PM PT

Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series to serve audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis about major developments impacting Latinos in the US.

Rhythms That Cross Borders.

The musical group Los Originarios del Plan, one of the leading exponents of son de la Tierra Caliente in the United States, has just released its album ¡Puritito Michoacán! on the Smithsonian Folkways label. From California’s San Joaquin Valley, this arpa grande ensemble keeps a regional tradition alive, with centuries-old roots in western Mexico and in migrant farmworker communities in California and Washington. The group brings corridos, sones planecos, and rancheras to new audiences. This is a conversation with its founder and leader.

Guest: Leonel Mendoza, Founder and Leader, Los Originarios del Plan, Orland, CA.

La Rama: A Tradition That Endures. This holiday season, Veracruz-born musician and luthier César Castro, known as “Jarochelo,” reflects on the nostalgia that runs through immigrant communities in the United States. From Los Angeles, he calls on people to embrace traditions like La Rama, a festive practice rooted in medieval carols and popular in southeastern Mexico, now adapted to the migrant experience with verses that call for housing, dignity, and community—turning memory into living celebration.

Guest: César Castro, Musician and Luthier, Los Angeles, CA.
