Latino Candidate Advances in the Race for CA Governor. Xavier Becerra has secured a place in the November general election in the race for governor of California. At the time of writing this brief, the battle for second place is between Republican Steve Pratt and Democratic billionaire Tom Steyer. Results are expected in the coming days. How is the count going? What is the outlook for the remaining votes? Who is Becerra and what has fuelled his sudden rise in this race? How should we interpret the results so far? Report by Araceli Martinez.
Primaries in Nevada, South Carolina and Two Other States. Nevada, South Carolina, Maine and North Dakota are heading to the polls. All eyes are on South Carolina, where a crowded Republican primary will test Trump’s hold over his party in one of the country’s most hotly contested states. What did voters say? How is the landscape shaping up for November? Report by José López Zamorano.
Immigration Policy: Chaos at the Start of the World Cup. The World Cup has already claimed its first victims of Trump’s immigration policy. A Somali referee was turned away upon arrival in Miami, preventing him from becoming the first Somali to hold that role at a World Cup. At least 15 officials and members of Iran’s coaching staff were denied visas. A Swiss player arrived late for the squad gathering due to entry issues. Who else will be left out of the tournament because of immigration decisions? What is happening at the ports of entry? Report by Mariana Pineda.
“No ICE in the Cup” Campaign Aims to Protect Immigrants during the World Cup.
A coalition of civil rights groups, faith communities, trade unions, artists and football fans are calling for ICE to stay out of World Cup events. The aim is to ensure that everyone, and especially immigrant communities, can participate in the World Cup celebrations safely and freely through strategies that create networks of support, protection and joyful resistance. What do these joyful strategies that “build community” consist of? How to build pressure to prevent ICE from entering the stadiums?
Guest: Paola Mendoza, author, filmmaker, activist, and member of “No ICE in the Cup”, Brooklyn, NY.
Cuba: The Declassified Documents. The Trump administration has filed criminal charges against former Cuban president Raúl Castro over the shootdown of a small aircraft and four crew members, accused of violating Cuban airspace. Cuba is reportedly on high alert. How imminent is a military invasion? Which interests in Washington hold the final decision? Is a negotiated solution possible? And what do declassified U.S. national security documents reveal about the 1996 shootdown? A researcher who has tracked covert U.S. missions in Cuba and Latin America shares his findings.
