THURSDAY, JANUARY 29
PROGRAM #11035 12:00 PM PT

Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series to serve audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis about major developments impacting Latinos in the US.

Minneapolis Rejects Federal Violence.

Guests: Jose Lopez Zamorano, Correspondent, Washington, DC; Mariana Pineda, Reporter, Houston, TX; Marco Vinicio Gonzalez, Reporter, New York, NY.

Minneapolis has become the epicenter of controversy over the federal immigration crackdown. Following the killing of Alex Pretti, a nurse shot dead during an operation, criticism of the tactics used by federal agents is growing. While Donald Trump sends his border czar to oversee the actions and adopts a conciliatory tone with the governor of Minnesota, complaints persist about the use of force, the criminalization of victims, and the impact of these operations on daily life and public trust. What is the outcome of this incursion into Minneapolis? Who will be held responsible for the lives lost? Why is there so much violence in that part of the country?

Guest: Franco Caliz-Aguilar, Co-director of Electoral Power Building, Community Change Action, Miami FL.

Negotiations to Avert a Government Shutdown. With the deadline looming, Congress is racing to avoid another government shutdown by advancing a bipartisan package of spending bills. The agreements include rolling back some of President Trump’s deepest cuts to health and education programs, as well as measures to scrutinize DHS and ICE use of force—a highly contentious issue. What do these deals include? What would the 2026 budget look like? Which priorities are shaping the negotiations?

Guest: Lorelei Salas, Former Director of Supervision, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau-CFPB, New York, NY.

The End of International Cooperation? The United States is reshaping its role in global cooperation. The Trump administration has withdrawn from dozens of multilateral organizations focused on climate, development, gender equality, and conflict resolution, arguing they no longer serve U.S. interests. The move marks a profound shift in foreign policy and redefines America’s global presence. What priorities are replacing multilateral diplomacy? What are the consequences of this retreat? What role did the U.S. play in these key institutions?

Guest: Gimena Sanchez, Director for the Andes, The Washington Office on Latin America-WOLA, Washington, DC.

Journalism at a Breaking Point? The mental health of journalists in the United States is at a red-alert level. A national survey reveals alarming rates of chronic stress and burnout, driven by economic hardships, heavier workloads, and an increasingly hostile political climate. What does the data show? How are political attacks on the press taking a toll? Why do support systems remain insufficient?

Guest: Luisa Ortiz Pérez, Executive Director, Vita-Activa.org, Palo Alto, CA.
