PROGRAM #10867 12:00 PM PT
Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series to serve audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis about major developments impacting Latinos in the US.
Guests: Jose Lopez Zamorano, Correspondent, Washington, DC; Araceli Martínez, Reporter, Los Angeles, CA; Jesús García, Reporter and Editor of Politics, Immigration and National Affairs, La Opinión and El Diario newspapers, New York, NY.
Mexicans in Alligator Alcatraz. The detention and deportation of the González brothers—Mexican citizens with legal status in Florida—has raised alarms over possible racial profiling by the Florida Highway Patrol. According to the Mexican consulate in Orlando, over 50 Mexican drivers have been stopped for “dark-tinted windows.” While authorities deny any discrimination, Mexico has issued a travel warning urging people to avoid Florida. Who are the detainees? How is the consulate protecting its nationals? What advice is being given to travelers? What do emergency reports reveal? How should one respond to unjustified detentions?
Guest: Rutilio Escandon Cadenas, Consul General of Mexico in Miami, Miami, FL.
Migrant Children Held in “Unsafe and Unsanitary” Conditions. Attorneys representing migrant children are denouncing inhumane conditions in U.S. detention centers, where minors are being held for weeks in unsanitary, prison-like settings. Tents, airports, and office spaces have replaced safe environments. What specific complaints and red flags have been raised? What impact does this experience have on children’s emotional and physical health? What is the current status of the Flores Settlement and legal protections? And who is accountable for responding to the needs of the most vulnerable?
Guest: Paula Andalo, Ethnic Media Editor, KFF Health News, Silver Spring, MD.
Areas Most at Risk of Losing Medical and Food Aid. The Trump budget plan approved by Congress is set to cut Medicaid coverage for millions and reduce SNAP benefits for all current recipient families. Analysts warn these cuts will be devastating for entire communities, with some regions hit harder than others. Where is the worst impact expected? What does losing access to medical and food services mean for the most vulnerable families? And what alternatives will they have?
Guest: Sinsi Hernandez-Cancio, Senior Fellow for Health Equity, National Partnership for Women and Families, Washington, DC.
