Sin Fronteras: Latino GDP Reaches Record Heights

By Radio Bilingüe

THURSDAY, APRIL 23
PROGRAM #11119 12:00 PM PT

Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series that serves audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis on major developments affecting Latinos in the US.

Latino GDP Reaches Record Heights.

U.S. Latino GDP continues to rise, surpassing Japan’s for the first time and becoming the world’s fourth-largest. The numbers tell a clear story: Latino communities are a record-breaking economic engine, continuing to grow despite persecution, tariffs, and immigration uncertainty. What drives this economic dynamism? How are Latino communities thriving in the face of these pressures? And what do these figures reveal about the true contribution of Latinos to the United States?

Guest: David Hayes-Bautista, Director, Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles-UCLA, Los Angeles, CA.

A Medal for Border Journalism. Alfredo Corchado, veteran journalist and executive director of the Puente News Collaborative, will receive the 2026 I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence. The award recognizes his commitment to partnership-driven journalism along the U.S.-Mexico border, in communities battered by the criminalization of migrants and the collapse of local news. His work takes on disinformation and community polarization head-on. What does this recognition mean for border and Latino journalism?

Guest: Alfredo Corchado, Executive Director, Puente News Collaborative, El Paso, TX.

Technology in the Service of Persecution. License plates, social media posts, and everyday digital data — all of it can be harvested to profile and target people in vulnerable communities. Specialized organizations are sounding the alarm: mass surveillance has become a weapon deployed in service of government policy. How do these tracking systems operate? What can people do to protect themselves? And is resistance even possible when Big Tech corporations are partners in these efforts?

Guest: Lucila Ortiz, Political Director, Working Partnerships, Silicon Valley Rising, Sacramento, CA.

Sexual Misconduct Allegations Cast a (Longer) Shadow Over Politics. Two abrupt congressional resignations open a new front in the battle for House control between California and Texas. Democrat Eric Swalwell and Republican Tony Gonzales both face accusations of sexual misconduct. Beyond the political scandal, what do these cases reveal about power and sexual violence? How have congressional leaders handled them? Is this kind of accountability in Congress real — or performative? And will it extend to those implicated in the Epstein case?

Guest: Dr. Lisa García Bedolla, Vice Provost for Graduate Studies, Dean of the Graduate Division and Chancellor’s Professor, UC Berkeley School of Education, Berkeley, CA.
