Sin Fronteras: Inflation Keeps Climbing

THURSDAY, MAY 21
PROGRAM #11147 12:00 PM PT

Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series that serves audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis on major developments affecting Latinos in the US.

The Electoral Race. Six states headed to the polls in a primary day that put Trump’s grip on the Republican Party to the test. The most closely watched race is Kentucky, where a Republican critic of the president is fighting to hold on. Contests in Georgia, Alabama, and Pennsylvania are also under the microscope. What were the results? Which party showed more enthusiasm at the polls? And how did Trump-backed candidates fare? Report by Gerardo Guzmán.

Violence in San Diego. Armed young men opened fire at an Islamic center in San Diego, killing a security guard and wounding two men before allegedly taking their own lives. The attack on the mosque is being investigated as a hate crime. How did the events unfold? What is known about the motive? And what evidence points to religious or racial hatred? Report by Aracely Martínez.

Charges Filed Against Federal Agent in Minneapolis. A Minnesota state prosecutor has filed second-degree assault and false crime reporting charges against an ICE agent for shooting a Venezuelan immigrant during Operation Metro Surge. A warrant has been issued for the agent’s arrest, making him the second federal officer to face charges in Minnesota. What exactly is he accused of? What does this prosecution mean? How many others are under investigation? And how are other states following the case? Report by Mariana Pineda.

Inflation Keeps Climbing. Prices continue to rise, driven by the war against Iran and other factors. Gas prices went up, and with them airfares, goods, and groceries. Consumer prices rose nearly 4% over the past year. President Trump calls it “short-term inflation” and says he doesn’t think about people’s “financial situation.” How much worse will inflation get? Who bears the heaviest burden? How is it hitting Latino families? And who ends up winning?

Guest: Lisette Engel, Director of the Economic Policy Project, UnidosUS, Washington, DC.

Consulates Under Scrutiny. The State Department has launched a review of more than 50 Mexican consulates in the United States, following far-right media reports claiming the consulates interfere with the administration’s “America First” agenda and encourage migration. The move comes amid mounting political pressures against Mexico and could lead to the closure of some diplomatic missions. What is Rubio arguing? What really motivated this process? And where do U.S.-Mexico relations stand?

Guest: Tony Payan, Director of the Center for the US and Mexico, Rice University’s Baker Institute, Houston, Texas.

Women Who Resist Together. Latino adults in the U.S. are less likely than other ethnic groups to report a mental health condition. Among those who do report anxiety, few receive support. Against that backdrop, Mujeres en Acción has emerged — a group focused on Latina women building networks of support and solidarity amid fear and silence. How does the collective work? What concerns do its members share? And how do they support one another? This is a special report produced through the Ethnic Media Collaborative, with support from the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism.

Tariff Refunds Under Fire. A federal trade court dealt a new blow to President Trump’s tariff policy, ruling that he lacks the authority to impose sweeping global tariffs. The ruling comes as the government begins refunding part of the $160 billion collected from tariffs that the Supreme Court previously declared illegal, plus interest. The refunds are going to importing businesses — not to the consumers who paid inflated prices — a disparity that has sparked sharp calls from state leaders for greater transparency in the process. How does this work? And who really benefits?

Guest: Alejandra Y Castillo, Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, President of Quantum Global Advisors, Chicago, IL.
