Protecting Black and Latino Voters

WEDNESDAY, MAY 20
PROGRAM #11145 12:00 PM PT
Protecting Black and Latino Voters.
Coinciding with yesterday’s primaries in Alabama, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, major civil rights organizations are joining forces to launch the 2026 Election Protection campaign. As Southern states eliminate districts that represent Black and Latino voters, the new coalition aims to provide resources through the voter hotline 866-OUR-VOTE, while fighting key threats to the ballot: the dilution of Black and Latino voting power, election denialism, voter roll purges, and voter intimidation.
Guest: Juan Rosa, National Director of Civic Engagement, NALEO Educational Fund, New York, NY.
Florida Wants to Ban Undocumented Students. Governor DeSantis is pushing to bar students who cannot prove citizenship or legal status from enrolling in Florida state universities or participating in GED preparation programs. In response, students, teachers, and advocates are mobilizing to fight back. In other Florida news, the detention center known as “Alligator Alcatraz” will close, and detainees are expected to be transferred in early June because it is “inefficient and too costly to operate,” according to reports. The facility is costing Florida more than one million dollars a day — and the state is falling behind on its bills.
Guest: Yareliz Méndez-Zamora, Florida Policy Coordinator, American Friends Service Committee, Miami, FL.
Millions Lose SNAP Benefits. More than three million people have lost access to the federal food assistance program after the historic cuts included in Trump’s budget megabill. It is the steepest decline in decades. Hunger is growing as the economy fails to improve. Who is being hit hardest? What do these cuts mean for the most vulnerable families? And what alternatives exist for those who need food?
Guest: Sinsi Hernández-Cancio, Senior Fellow for Health Equity, National Partnership for Women & Families, Washington, DC.
