PROGRAM #10926 11:00 PM PT
Prop 50: The Election Is Underway.
California voters have already begun casting their ballots in the special election, which will culminate on November 4, and will decide the fate of Proposition 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act. This measure, championed by California’s Democratic leaders, is presented to voters as a direct response to Texas’s new political map, which aims to maintain Republican control of Congress. How did this political battle begin? Is democracy at risk? Who supports and who opposes the referendum initiative? Both sides present their arguments.
Guests: Sandra Celedon, Representative of the “Yes to Prop. 50” campaign, Democratic pre-candidate for the California State Assembly, Fresno, CA; Abel Maldonado, Representative of the “No to Prop. 50” campaign, Former Republican Lt. Governor of California, Santa Barbara, CA.
The Districts at the Heart of Prop 50. In response to Texas Republicans’ controversial plan to add five new GOP congressional districts, California is asking voters to temporarily suspend the current political map drawn by its independent redistricting commission, citing an electoral crisis. Which congressional districts in California would be most affected? And how would Prop 50 alter the racial and geographic representation framework carefully crafted by the citizens’ commission?
Guest: David Ayon, Political Analyst, Researcher at the Center for the Study of Los Angeles and Author, Oakland, CA.
