Pregnancy in the Middle of Heat Waves

By Radio Bilingüe
Published July 23, 2026

THURSDAY, JULY 23
PROGRAM #11215 11:00 AM PT

Pregnancy in the Middle of Heat Waves.

Extreme temperatures and air pollution pose a serious threat to pregnant women and their babies, especially in the Central Valley. Exposure to these conditions increases the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and fetal death. Many workers continue laboring without adequate shade, water, or rest breaks. How can a safe pregnancy be maintained under these conditions? What do experts recommend? How can mothers and babies be protected from these external factors? And what do employers need to know?

Guests: Juanita Martinez, Labor Rights Program Coordinator, and Claudia Vielma, Environmental Justice Program Coordinator, both of them representing Líderes Campesinas, which provides resources and support in 16 counties in California, including Monterey and Fresno counties; Dr. Diana Ramos, Surgeon General of California, Governor’s Office, Sacramento, CA; Flérida Aguilar, Health Promoter, CalViva Health, Madera, CA.
