Every five minutes, a person dies from an overdose in the United States. Most cases, according to official data, are due to the use of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl. Although opioid use began in rural areas among white youths, it has spread to large cities and is affecting African-Americans, Latinos and other ethnic groups.
