THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22
PROGRAM #11307 11:00 AM PT

New Drugs Raise Alarm Nationwide.

Cyclorphine, a synthetic opioid reportedly up to 10 times more potent than fentanyl, is now circulating in San Francisco and has raised new concerns following the death of a 16-year-old. The drug can show up in counterfeit pills, may not be detected by fentanyl test strips, and can require multiple doses of Narcan to reverse an overdose. What do we know about this emerging drug? Meanwhile, scientists nationwide are warning that clandestine labs are developing dangerous new synthetic substances at a rapid pace, including so-called “Frankenstein opioids,” which can reach consumers long before public health officials even know they exist. How are these drugs making their way onto the market?

Guests: Laura Guzman, Executive Director, National Harm Reduction Coalition, Oakland, CA; Dr. Alejandro Castellanos, Addiction Medicine Physician, San Francisco Department of Public Health, San Francisco, CA; Yarelix Estrada, Drug Checking Co-Lead, Remedy Alliance For The People, New York, NY.
