Extra Edition: Mothers Day, Mothers Health.
On the heels of Mother’s Day and on occasion of Mental Health Month, Dr. Diana Ramos, mother and Surgeon General of the State of California, discusses maternal mental health issues, including the higher rates of postpartum depression among Latina mothers and the greater barriers they face to receiving adequate medical care, and what communities can do to help. Dr. Ramos also comments on The Mexican Migrant Mothers’ Health Paradox: the fact that Latina mothers, despite their poverty, have remarkable birth outcomes, but they lose this advantage as they acculturate in the US.
