Mexico: To the polls to elect judges and magistrates

By Radio Bilingüe
Published May 16, 2025

FRIDAY, MAY 16
PROGRAM #10777 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

On June 1, Mexicans go to the polls to elect nearly 900 judges and magistrates in the federal judicial branch, a first of its kind process, the first time that citizens will elect judges. Among the positions at play are nine justices of Mexico’s Supreme Court. What will the process be like? On other news, in an effort to change the pervasive narrative of “narcocorridos,” the popular songs that glorify drug lords and hit men violence, the Mexican government is launching a “Mexico Canta” festival and contest calling on young composers and singers to sing to peace and for a society free of drug addictions.

Guest: Eduardo Huchim, Journalist and former Board Member, Mexico City’s Electoral Institute, MX; excerpts from recent statements by Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, and Mexico’s Minister of Finance and Public Credit, Edgar Amador.
