Mexico City prepares Grito de Independencia celebration

By Radio Bilingüe
Published September 12, 2025

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
PROGRAM #10896 12:00 PM PT

Mexico Edition.

Mexico City is preparing for the traditional celebration of the Grito de Independencia (Cry of Independence). This will be Claudia Sheinbaum’s first cry for independence as president. She has announced that this year, binational singer-songwriters and musicians will headline the festivities in the Zócalo to celebrate the spirit of resistance of Mexicans living abroad. Listeners are invited to comment on the significance of the celebration. On other news, the Mexican government announced a tax on sugary drinks for next year and tariffs on other products. And in an effort to change the pervasive narrative of “narcocorridos,” the popular songs that glorify drug lords and hit men violence, the Mexican government launched a “Mexico Canta” festival and contest calling on young composers and singers to sing to peace and for a society free of drug addictions. Two young semifinalists from Pomona, California comment on what motivated them to participate in the contest.

This program includes excerpts from recent statements by Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo; Mexico’s Minister of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard; Mexico’s Undersecretary for Integration and Development of the Health Sector, Eduardo Clark; Asalia Segura and Norma Rodriguez, “México Canta” semifinalists; and interviews by Radio Bilingüe’s Daniela Rodriguez and Chelis Lopez on the occasion of “El Grito de Independencia”.
