Mexico: Citlali Fabián, Photographer of the Year 2026

Oaxacan photographer Citlali Fabián has been named Photographer of the Year 2026 at the Sony World Photography Awards for her project Bilha, Stories of My Sisters, a series built alongside Indigenous women from Oaxaca who have transformed the fight for territorial and human rights and for activism. One of the women she photographed is María Elena Ríos, a saxophonist and symbol of the struggle against gender violence after surviving an acid attack. In this interview, they speak about their story and her ongoing legal fight.
