Budget Cuts Threaten San Francisco’s Pioneering Model for Combating HIV – San Francisco has long been celebrated as a pioneer in HIV care in the United States. However, this successful model is now in serious jeopardy because of federal budget cuts and the city’s budget deficit. Unless changes are made, thousands of people will lose access to medical care and treatment-related services. Sophia Rerucha spoke with a person living with HIV and with representatives of organizations affected by the cuts, and she reports from San Francisco.
In Oaxaca, Women’s Fishing Cooperatives Must Adapt to Survive – The environmental crisis is threatening the livelihoods of fishing communities, especially the most remote ones. In 2025, Hurricane Erick devastated mangroves in the lagoons in Oaxaca, Mexico, putting pressure on the mangrove mussel. This mollusk, known locally as “tichinda,” is an important source of income for the Indigenous and Afro-descendant fisherwomen of the Corralero-Alotengo lagoon. Jackie Botts reports from Oaxaca on their efforts to keep the mangrove healthy through sustainable fishing.
