PROGRAM #11066 11:00 AM PT

Luis Valdez: The American Pachuco.

Widely regarded as the father of Chicano cinema, Valdez explores Chicano identity, social justice, and the Chicano experience. This year, his story reached the Sundance Film Festival with the premiere of the documentary American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez. The film traces his upbringing in Delano, his connection to the grape strike, and the founding of El Teatro Campesino, which fused art and activism, amplifying the voices of farmworkers and migrant communities and helping catalyze social change. What is his cultural and political legacy? How does his work speak to today’s challenges? This is an exclusive interview in the special series Thirty Años, Thirty Voces series.

Guest: Luis Valdéz, playwright, filmmaker, activist, and founding artistic director, El Teatro Campesino, San Juan Bautista, CA.
