“Love the Stranger…”

A different kind of Christmas is unfolding in many faith communities across the United States. Churches from diverse traditions are reinterpreting the Nativity tradition through the migrant experience: a child forced to flee to survive. Nativity scenes show armed ICE agents surrounding Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, and the Wise Kings. Religious leaders—from the pope to local clergy—are questioning immigration policies and calling for the defense of human dignity during this season of peace. How are immigrant families experiencing the holidays? How are mass deportation plans affecting celebrations? What meaning does this season take on amid the stigmatization of immigrants? How are church hierarchies and grassroots faith workers responding?

Guest: Joaquin Arriaga, Catholic Priest, St. Agnes Mission and Anthony of Padua, Fresno, CA.

Know Your Rights: What to Do If You Must Travel. Civil rights advocates warn that cooperation between the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is turning airports into immigration checkpoints. Since March, TSA has been sharing domestic flight passenger lists with ICE to help intercept travelers and carry out deportations. How can people travel safely during the holidays? What should travelers consider before going to the airport? What happens when traveling by land?

Guest: Alma Rosa Nieto, Immigration Attorney, Los Angeles, CA.
