Trump Approves More Funding to Tighten Much-Criticized Immigration Policy – President Donald Trump has signed into law a massive $70 billion package that allocates additional resources to ICE and Border Patrol operations through 2029. The measure, approved by the Republican majority in the House and Senate, was immediately rejected by lawyers and activists. They say the billions in funding will be used to increase detentions and deportations and to tighten border surveillance without the accountability measures demanded by Democrats. New York City Commits to Universal Free Child Care – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, in partnership with Governor Kathy Hochul, announced the first phase of an unprecedented program that will offer free child care in the city regardless of families’ income, ZIP code, or immigration status. The initiative is designed to alleviate one of the greatest financial burdens faced by the city’s working families and immigrant communities. Selena Continues to Inspire Generations 30 Years Later – Three decades after her death, Tejano music singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez remains a source of inspiration for many generations. Not only have murals and memorabilia been created in her memory, but various artists have also recorded her songs, and dozens of books have been written about her legacy. The most recent volume is “The Selena Reader: Remembering the Queen of Tejano,” a collection of essays, poems, memoirs, and short stories compiled by two scholars from California State University, Fresno, in California’s Central Valley.
