Criticism Mounts Against New Immigration Detention Center in Florida – Just over two weeks after its opening, criticism of the “Alligator Alcatraz” continues unabated. The controversial detention center in Florida was announced as a facility to house immigrants accused of serious crimes. However, a journalistic investigation reveals that many of the detainees have been convicted of minor offenses. Legislators and civil society groups have described the prisoners’ conditions as inhumane and are calling for transparency. Meanwhile, other groups are demanding the closure of the center, according to our correspondent in Miami, Diana Montaño.

New Mexico Border Communities Demand Safe Drinking Water – Residents of two New Mexico border towns have been complaining about contaminated water since large multinational development projects began near their communities. The state environmental agency is backing their demand to have a voice in addressing this critical problem. Kent Paterson brings us this report from Sunland Park, New Mexico, voiced by Rubén Tapia.

Latino Mayors Take Action to Protect Migrants – In response to violent immigration raids that have terrorized their residents, the cities of Bell Gardens and Huntington Park, California, are taking municipal action. Led by their mayors, they are providing food to frightened families who remain in their homes. They have also passed motions demanding the suspension of the controversial operations and empowering residents. Alejandro Maciel reports from Bell Gardens.
