The detention of Ruth López, a prominent academic, human rights advocate, and defender of Venezuelan migrants held in El Salvador’s “mega” prison, has caused concern. The government of Nayib Bukele accuses her of embezzlement. Yet, critics say that her arrest is another example of what they call a wave of repression against those who question Bukele’s authoritarianism. Gerardo Guzmán brings us this report.
