PROGRAM #10962 12:00 PM PT

Impersonating ICE to Commit Crimes.

The FBI has urged partner agencies to ensure that officers clearly identify themselves after several cases in which individuals posing as ICE agents carried out kidnappings and assaults. Critics say the use of masks and the lack of visible badges make these impersonations easier — and also shield officers who engage in misconduct. How common are these attacks by people disguised as federal agents? How real is the FBI’s warning? What penalties will agents face if they fail to identify themselves? How can communities protect themselves?

Guest: Vanessa Cardenas, Executive Director, America’s Voice, Washington, DC.

Military in the Immigration System. The Trump administration has authorized hundreds of military attorneys to serve as temporary immigration judges. Experts warn that this undermines the right to fair hearings and blurs the line between civilian and military authority. The Department of Justice also changed its rules so that any attorney may be appointed as a temporary immigration judge, without requiring litigation or immigration experience. What does it mean to militarize the immigration court system? What early impacts are being felt in the courts and among those facing proceedings?

Guest: Santiago Mueckay, Associate Director of Advocacy, Vera Institute of Justice , New York, NY.

“You Have Arrived in Hell.” That is the title of the most comprehensive investigation to date into the treatment of hundreds of Venezuelan migrants whom Trump sent to El Salvador. Human Rights Watch documented severe abuses, detailing inhumane prison conditions, isolation, beatings, and sexual violence. What are the most alarming findings in this report? How is the United States implicated in these abuses? Who is accountable for what was done to these migrants?

Guests: Rene Valiente, Lawyer and Director of Investigations, Cristosal, Guatemala City, Guatemala; Juan Pappier, Americas Deputy Director, Human Rights Watch, Washington, DC.
