PROGRAM #11283 12:00 PM PT

Immigrants Under Fire.

An immigration agent who was not wearing a body camera shot an immigrant food-delivery worker in the back in Austin. It is the latest in about two dozen cases during Trump’s second term in which federal agents have opened fire, sometimes fatally. Videos and witness accounts have often contradicted official versions of what happened. Why is this pattern recurring during immigration operations? When are agents allowed to fire at a vehicle? What safeguards govern the use of deadly force? And who can be held accountable?

Guest: Domingo García, Attorney and Immediate Past National President, League of United Latin American Citizens-LULAC, Dallas, TX.

Massive Expansion of Immigration Detention. ICE is rapidly expanding its immigration detention network through multibillion-dollar contracts to build mega-detention centers in several states, with plans that even include mobile facilities. How is this infrastructure growing nationwide? Which private companies are profiting, and which political campaigns are benefiting? What oversight exists over detention conditions and how long people can be held?

Guest: Jasmine Garsd, Immigration Correspondent and Host of “The Last Cup”, National Public Radio-NPR, New York, NY.

Bills to Protect Immigrant Families Await Governor’s Signature. Immigrant rights organizations helped secure passage in the California Legislature of five measures aimed at reining in corporations that profit from detention and deportation and bringing greater transparency to federal law-enforcement practices. The bills range from taxing private detention centers and prohibiting the use of public funds for family separation to requiring investigations into fatal shootings by ICE or Border Patrol agents. They now await Governor Newsom’s signature, and he has not yet taken a position.

Guest: Jeannette Zanipatin, Director of Policy and Advocacy, CHIRLA, Los Angeles, CA.
