ICE and the Violent Deaths of Immigrants. 

In eight days, federal agents shot and killed two immigrants who were on their way to work in their vehicles. A third died after being struck by a vehicle while fleeing agents. Since the start of this administration, immigration officers have opened fire on more than 30 people — though observers believe the numbers are higher — with more than ten deaths reported. Nearly all of the shootings involved people who were in cars. What is happening? What protocols govern the use of force? Who is being held accountable for these deaths? And what is known about the agents responsible?

New “Public Charge” Rule. The Trump administration has finalized a new “public charge” policy that would give immigration officials greater authority to deny permanent residence to legally present immigrants who have used certain public programs, such as Medicaid, food assistance, or housing assistance. The measure overturns existing rules for immigrants applying for permanent residence. Advocates fear the rule will lead to arbitrary denials and widespread fear of seeing a doctor or filing taxes.
