THURSDAY, MAY 8
PROGRAM #10768 11:00 AM PT

Extra Edition: Healthy Eyes.

Nearly 80 million people in the US have diseases that can cause vision loss, yet many are unaware of the risks and the steps they can take to protect their sight. During Healthy Vision Month, a national agency dedicated to vision research is launching the “Healthy Lives, Healthy Eyes” campaign to raise awareness of the overall health of vision. They say when people have regular eye exams they not only take care of their eye health, they also take care of their whole body. An eye health expert discusses top eye diseases, eye exams, healthy habits, and more.

Guest: Dr. Michael Maldonado, Ophthalmologist, Spokesperson for The National Eye Institute, El Paso, TX.

First-in-the-World Pesticide Alert Tool. Farmworkers advocates are celebrating the launching of SprayDays California, a first-in-the-world system to notify the public before certain pesticides are used on farms across the state. They call it a giant step forward in the push for toxic pesticide transparency. How can farmers and farmworkers use this tool? How will it impact the areas with the highest pesticide use? How will it be enforced? How do farmworkers feel about the new warning system? A Central Valley reporter has been following the story.

Guest: Daniela Rodriguez, News Reporter, Radio Bilingüe, California Local News Fellow, UC Berkeley, Fresno, CA.
