“For the Common Good” Part 1. 

A common thread of the Smithsonian celebration of the US 250th anniversary is the theme “For the Common Good,” a concept that was advanced in the Declaration of Independence and later in the US Constitution. In these conversations, community leaders comment on the efforts to move beyond the individual interests and personal gain and use our freedoms to promote public policies and legal systems around the principles of collective responsibility, shared benefits and community wellbeing.
