A central thread of the Smithsonian’s celebration of the U.S. 250th anniversary is the concept of “for the common good”, an idea first advanced in the Declaration of Independence and later in the United States Constitution. Folk artists and culture bearers reflect on their efforts to use their freedoms to transcend individual interests and advance the principles of collective responsibility and community well-being. This program originally aired the day before yesterday, July 11, 2026.
