Families Resisting Together.
In Chicago, the escalation of federal force under the “Midway Blitz” immigration operation has driven hundreds of residents into the streets to defend their neighbors. In one neighborhood, mothers, teachers, and community members created a “walking school bus” to escort students after raids emptied streets, classrooms, and shops. Others sound alarms with whistles, while some more video record federal agents. How are Chicago residents organizing? What networks are emerging? What results are they seeing? How are these efforts being replicated in other cities?
Guests: Joanna Hernández, News Reporter, WTTW/Chicago PBS, Chicago,IL; Artemio Arreola, Director of Community Relations, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Chicago, IL.
The Presidential Election in Honduras. While the Honduran electoral authority resumed counting votes and spoke of a “technical tie” between two of its main presidential candidates, former president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was serving a 45-year sentence for drug trafficking and weapons possession, was released from a US prison after receiving a pardon from President Trump. What influence did Trump have on the election? Why was the pardon of a president convicted of large-scale drug trafficking used as an electoral tool? In a highly migrant country, what has been the migration trend in recent years, and what are the expected repercussions of the election on migrant communities?
Guest: Helena Olea, Deputy Director, Alianza Americas, Chicago, IL.
The Risks of Being Both Journalist and Immigrant. News reporting is no longer routine for an immigrant-led newsroom in North Carolina, where unpredictable federal operations and increasingly violent raids shape their daily agenda. With reporters facing real risks of arbitrary detention, the newsroom has rethought how to report in the field. How are these journalists carrying out their work amid such threats? What lessons have the violent raids left? What recommendations can they offer to other newsrooms covering immigration enforcement?
Guest: Paola Jaramillo, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Enlace Latino NC, Raleigh, NC.
