Extractivism in Chaco Canyon?
The federal government is proposing to revoke mineral protections in New Mexico’s Greater Chaco region, home to Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If the proposal moves forward, these ancient sacred lands would be opened to oil and gas extraction. On International Mother Earth Day, what is at stake in the Greater Chaco? What would losing this protection mean? And what are experts warning about?
Guest: Carlos Matutes, Program Director New México, GreenLatinos, Sandia Park, New Mexico.
Looking Ahead to the 2030 Census. As the government moves to exclude immigrant populations from the census, civil organizations warn that the consequences would be severe: less political representation, fewer resources, and entire communities rendered invisible. Collective efforts are already taking shape to ensure a fair and inclusive count — one that reflects a truly multiracial democracy. Why is the census said to be under attack? And what is being done to prepare and prevent a serious undercount?
Guest: Juan Proaño, CEO, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Miami, Florida.
Treasurer Candidate Wants ICE Out of California. State Senator Anna Caballero, a Democrat from the San Joaquin Valley running for California State Treasurer, has announced a plan to prevent state taxpayer money from funding ICE operations within California. Her so-called “ICE Out” plan would prohibit state bond funds from being used to finance immigration raids, detention centers, and other ICE activities. In this conversation, Caballero shares that for her, the plan is deeply personal.
Guest: Sen. Anna Caballero, California State Senate (D-14), Sacramento, CA.
